In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, Jesus touches the sick to heal them from sin and, if it is God's will, from physical illness.
In this sacrament, Jesus provides spiritual healing through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, signified by the anointing with oil. A person need not be near death in order to be anointed. This sacrament is given to those who are gravely ill, those anticipating serious surgery, or those in great need of God's healing in their lives. If it is possible, the Sacrament of Reconciliation precedes this sacrament, and the anointing is followed by the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
