What is Pre-Cana?

Pre-Cana is the name given to the process for marriage preparation and requires at least six (6) months.

Cana is the name of the town in which performed his first public miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding; see John 2: 1-11.

What is the Purpose?

The purpose of marriage preparation is not to be another hoop to jump through, but it is meant to facilitate discussions about important topics that you will be facing as a married couple.

Look at your marriage prep process as an opportunity to look forward toward your new life together, make sure you are on the same page as a couple, and ready to face this exciting journey as one.

What are the Requirements?

  1. Three (3) meetings with your presider: It is the responsibility of the couple not only to ask the priest/deacon to preside, but also to initiate the marriage preparation process with their presider. In rare instances couples may be prepared by someone other than their presider and this will need to be approved.
  2. Baptismal Record: If Catholic, a new record must be requested from the church of Baptism and mailed directly to the attention of Elizabeth Tribbey at St. Brigid Church. Photocopies or scans of the record are not acceptable.  If not Catholic but Christian and baptized, a photocopy of the baptismal record is sufficient.
  3. MA Form/ Pre-Marital Information: This will be provided to you via email or can be found linked on our website under Wedding Forms and Links and needs to be signed by your presider.
  4. MB Form/Freedom to Marry and Suppletary Oath: This will be provided to you via email or can be found linked on our website under Wedding Forms and Links tab.  These need to be signed by your presider.
  5. FOCCUS Inventory: The prospective bride and groom will need to furnish a personal and separate email address. The inventory will be sent via email to each person, by the presider, with instructions for completing it. The first person also enters the payment information for the report. If providing your own presider, the FOCCUS Inventory may be set up through him.
  6.  Marriage Preparation Program: You, as a couple, are required to attend a marriage preparation program approved and held by the Archdiocese. These are set/run through the Archdiocese of Louisville. Alternative programs are possible if needed, with the guidance of your presider.  These can easily be found linked on our website under Wedding Forms and Links.
  7. Wedding Readings: Wedding readings are chosen by the couple with the guidance of the presider. These readings are found in the Together for Life booklet, available upon request, or on the Together for Life website, linked on our website under Wedding Forms and Links.
