As we begin 2023, I want to take the opportunity to acclaim our fine music programs at both St. Brigid and St. James, as well as to announce some significant changes in the liturgical staff. Our celebrations of Advent and Christmas at both parishes, including the multiple concerts featuring so many professional guests are a recent reminder of the high value we place on liturgical music.
As of January 1, Philip Hines has retired from his full-time position as the Director of Worship and Music for both parishes. Working part-time, Pip will serve as Music and Choir Director for St. James, continuing to provide the high-quality music programs that we value. A second change is that Dr. Tom Parr will assume more responsibility at St. Brigid, managing the music program, and continuing to inspire beautiful and prayerful worship. His title will be Music and Choir Director for the parish. Both Pip and Dr. Parr are happy with this arrangement.
The administrative responsibilities of Pip’s prior position have been assumed by Patsy Bourke, a long-time member of St. Brigid (and a student at St. James in grade school). Patsy will serve as Worship Coordinator for both parishes. Her responsibilities will include: ensuring our sacristies are well-stocked with what we need to celebrate Eucharist; meeting with families to plan funerals at both of our churches; and assisting with the logistical arrangements during special seasons, such as Ash Wednesday, Holy Week and Easter, Advent, and Christmas. She will also prepare the Prayers of the Faithful and pulpit announcements read at Sunday Eucharist.
If you attend only our churches, you might not realize that very few parishes can match the high-quality level of our cantors, musicians, and choral singing. This is a labor of love for Pip and Dr. Parr, as well as for the members of our choirs and the other musicians. We believe that taking the administrative responsibilities out of the positions will lessen the stress on both Pip and Dr. Parr, so they can devote their time fully to music. We welcome Patsy Bourke to our staff and express deep appreciation to Pip and Dr. Parr to as they step into these two new positions. Fr. Gary
